George Smiley is one of the most brilliantly realised characters in British fiction. Bespectacled, tubby, eternally middle-aged, and deceptively ordinary, he has a mind like a steel trap and is said to possess 'the cunning of Satan and the conscience of a virgin'.

Miss Ailsa Brimley is in a quandary. She's received a peculiar letter from Mrs Stella Rode, saying that she fears her husband - an assistant master at Carne School - is trying to kill her. Reluctant to go to the police, Miss Brimley calls upon her old wartime colleague, George Smiley. Unfortunately, it's too late. Mrs Rode has just been murdered. As Smiley takes up the investigation, he realises that in life - as in espionage - nothing is quite what it appears. His investigation raises a multitude of questions. Who could have hated Stella Rode enough to kill her? Why was her dog put down shortly before the murder? And what did Mad Janie see on that fatal night? To discover the truth, Smiley must lift the lid on a world of hidden passions and dangerous hatreds.

A Murder of Quality (Audible Audio Edition) John le Carré Michael Jayston Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books

A Murder of Quality is excellent. I had a hard time with Le Carre's first Smiley novel, "A Call for the Dead." Now in reading "A Murder of Quality" I can see that I either need to go back and re-read "Dead," or consider that it was a weak start for Le Carre. "A Murder of Quality" sucks you right in and takes you along excellently.

A lot of info is in the mixmaster near the end and that can be confusing. But as noted above, "we're just gettin' started" with Smiley on what we know will be a successful adventure over time. Le Carre's writing lights up your brain cinematically (which is also said of Graham Greene). The description of a tea tray just about anywhere in the literature of Great Britain is unparalleled on this earth. President-elect Trump may take Americans wherever he will on this forthcoming four (4) year adventure, but there will always be an England (Great Britain).

A Murder of Quality (Audible Audio Edition) John le Carré Michael Jayston Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books Reviews

"A Murder of Quality" was spy fiction writer John LeCarre's very decent second novel, first published in 1962. It features his classic literary creation, British spymaster George Smiley, in a one-off murder mystery, at a very old and very private school.

As the story opens, George Smiley is retired from the Secret Intelligence Service over events that occured in "Call for the Dead". He gets a request for help from a wartime colleague, a Miss Ailsa Brimley, who runs a small newspaper and who gets a letter from a female subscriber predicting her own murder. By the time Smiley gets involved, the woman, the wife of an instructor at Carne, is already dead, brutally murdered in her own house. Police suspicion falls on a mentally disturbed woman, but Smiley runs his own investigation, just slightly off the books, and discovers a school torn by petty jealousies and a few truly dangerous secrets.

The murder mystery is intricately if self-consciously plotted; the solution is perhaps not obvious until late in the story. LeCarre uses the novel to flesh out the charcter of George Smiley, and to work in some harsh social satire against English private schools. "A Murder of Quality" is highly recommended to fans of John LeCarre's novels.
This is a classic "whodunit". Along the way, there is a mini-study of the ways, manners, and prejudices of the small world at a British private school of a certain time. Some readers might find the ending a bit too much of a conventional "set piece". However, it seems highly consistent with the characters and circumstances. Not the author's best, perhaps, but well written, interesting, and highly entertaining.
George Smiley, formerly of the British Secret Intelligence Service, now fidgeting in unhappy retirement, gets a call from a wartime colleague. Miss Ailsa Brimley runs a small newspaper; one of her subscribers has sent a letter predicting her own murder. On the heels of the letter comes news that the woman in question has been brutally murdered at Carne, a very old and very private school. Who else should take the puzzling case but a former spymaster?

Such is the premise of "A Murder of Quality", John LeCarre's very decent second novel, first published in 1962. Smiley, who has connections at Carne, undertakes a private investigation with the tacit approval of the local police, who suspect a local mentally disturbed woman. Smiley's investigation leads him deep into the plotting, petty politics, and jealousies of the school staff, where he finds many suspects and more than a few lies.

The murder mystery is carefully plotted; the solution may not be obvious until late in the novel. LeCarre works in some harsh satire on private schools, but the real fun may be watching him fill out the character of the non-heroic Smiley, who would go on to feature in several of LeCarre's hard-edged but excellent espionage novels. "A Murder of Quality" is highly recommended to fans of LeCarre and of George Smiley.
Le Carre's books are always interesting to read. He has a very human way of relating to his characters and that translates into his writing. You feel empathy and compassion even for the evil-doers, and outliers he describes. And he does a great job from the detective angle too. Too bad there aren't more writers like him! people who are left out, and suffer.
I have found these early le Carre novels to be, in my opinion, excellent reading. They have a momentum which is lacking in his more lenghty tomes. Whilst reading the Night Manager I have managed to sneak in the first and second of Le Carre's novels.
Recently, I learned that John le Carre had a final novel in which George Smiley was going to spear. I thought before reading it, I should fully enter into the world of George Smiley and read le Carre's earlier novels. "A Murder of Quality" is one of le Carre's early novels and is one of his lesser works. It is a fun book and it is a pleasure to learn more about Smiley's early life. I would recommend it only to "completionists " like myself.
I am a great fan of the George Smiley series - some of the best cold war espionage novels around. A Murder of Quality, however, is a departure from espionage into "who-done-it?" In my view, not exceptional in that genre, but offering added interest because of the way Smiley's character (and a few of his colleagues/friends) is further fleshed out in this different context.
A Murder of Quality is excellent. I had a hard time with Le Carre's first Smiley novel, "A Call for the Dead." Now in reading "A Murder of Quality" I can see that I either need to go back and re-read "Dead," or consider that it was a weak start for Le Carre. Although better known as the creator of Raffles, the charming burglar, Hornung also wrote some impressive novels, such as this story of a woman acquitted of murdering her husband, yet convicted in the court of public opinion. The explosive twists of plot leading to her reprieve from prejudice makes this a superb work. Frankly, I find Hornung a superior writer to his brother-in-law, Conan Doyle, whom, without Holmes, would have been forgotten.
BETTER CHANGE THE LOCKS. BOBBY DID.

Disbarred attorney Bobby Custer continues to use his main skill set; murder, treachery and perversion in an ongoing effort to increase his personal gains.

Ever the charmer, Bobby provides Emily with an unforgettable valentine that up until now she could only dream about . . . or maybe it was a nightmare. Together they forever mark the day with a memorable secret. The all too dark side of our legal industry, and the type of character we're all too afraid to admit exists!" The Dirty Lowdown

The Corridor Man series is written by Mike Faricy and was originally released under the pseudonym Nick James.

Corridor Man Valentine eBook Mike Faricy

Mr Faricy gives a long preview of Corridor Man at the end of his first Dev Haskell book, Russian Roulette. He also gives a shorter preview of Dev Haskell #2, Mr Swirlee. Having enjoyed Russian Roulette, I opted to purchase Mr Swirlee. I then read the extended preview of Corridor Man, and was hooked. I was pleased to find the price was $.99. So I purchased it to finish the story, thinking that perhaps it would be another series to add to my reading list. It is a bit darker than the Dev Haskell stories; but the author does note this. Partway through the book, I determined that although this is a a good book, it is a bit heavy for my taste, and I probably wouldn't continue the series once I finished this book. Imagine my dismay when I discovered a "cliffhanger"; Corridor Man is not a complete book to start a series, it is a portion (albeit a long one) of a whole.
I also read romance/erotica novels, and I have stopped reading any that do not finish a story in one book. After FSOG, I have determined that there is no good reason for an author to present a story in serial form, other than to line their pockets. I do like series of books featuring the same or connected characters; it gives me the option of reading on about what is happening further in their "lives" or not, if I I chose to read only one book. I am sorely disappointed that Mr. Faricy has chosen this route of the cliffhanger. If in the description of Corridor Man there was an indication that it was a two part book, my decision to purchase may have changed. If in that description the author would explain that the story was too long for one book, I might have had a little more understanding, and made a decision to purchase both. If both books were offered as a bundle, due to the length... I could go on. Suffice it to say I am not purchasing Corridor Man 2: Opportunity Knocks. I can live without finding out what happens to Bobby Custer.

Corridor Man Valentine eBook Mike Faricy Reviews

Love the new character Bobby Custer, a disbarred attorney with nothing to lose. He gets time shaved off his sentence and is jettisoned into a world that he doesn't quite get. Enter "Prez", at times a little threatening but also Bobby's only friend. Prez is one of my all-time fictional characters. Everyone has known a Prez, but I haven't seen the type so well developed.

This is a slight departure from the Dev Haskell books. I like the Bobby character more, but that could be just that Corridor Man is written in third person, which I tend to prefer to first person fiction. Anyway, this is a must read. Like Haskell, it is set in St. Paul, but local knowledge is not necessary to enjoy this book. Looking to start the second volume.
Bobby Custer is in prison. He, in his words, had a "minor dalliance with a trust fund." He has lost his job, his license to practice law, his wife, his reputation, and his freedom. He has served four years of a seven year sentence when two FBI agents visit him in jail. They offer him a get-out-of-jail-free card under certain conditions and they demand an answer immediately. Bobby thinks of three more years and answers yes. He is transferred to a halfway house that very night, where he is to spend the next sixty day learning how to reintegrate into society. Then he is instructed to apply for an entry level job at the law firm of Denton, Allan, Sawyer, & Hinz, where he will be hired. He will be required to report back to the two agents. All goes as planned and Bobby is hired to drive witnesses to depositions and back home.

Bobby seems like a sympathetic character, at first, though he is a little free and loose on petty crime. But he is trying to make a new start and we should cut him a little slack, right? Uh, no. It seems, if you give Bobby an inch, he takes a mile. And he's always thinking, thinking about Bobby, that is. How he can turn everything to his advantage. And turn things he does. It's like watching a trainwreck! You can't turn the pages fast enough. It's an insanely fascinating story. That's the good stuff. The bad stuff is it ends in a cliff hanger. This didn't bother me too much because book two is free on Unlimited and I have Unlimited. You have to decide how you feel about it.

I loved the book and have already borrowed the second book. It's an exciting, entertaining story. I highly recommend it but it's up to you. And it's not just two books, I think it's four. You think about it. I'm going to be reading.
This would have been a great book except the author spoiled it by leaving me hanging at the end. It is a shameless attempt to get me to purchase book 2 in the series and I will not. This isnt a stand alone story.
Suffice it to say I am not purchasing Corridor Man 2 Opportunity Knocks. I can live without finding out what happens to Bobby Custer.
I did like the main character in the beginning. But then,to quote the author, he really "lost his edge." Kind of too mushy at times with the love stories between characters. Had me wondering if this was more romance than mystery. Lots of cliff hangers to the point of annoyance. Mid intense interview of suspect, whoops on to totally unrealated part of the story. Author never returns to finish intense interview. Cliff hanger. Annoying. Some things through out the book are too obvious to the reader but somehow the characters remain clueless even tho they hold all the pieces to the puzzle. Maddening to me because the characters are portrayed to be so intelligent but suddenly they are not. Villain is also very inconsistant in the last book. He goes from vicious killer to, well off character, so as not to spoil if you decide to read. My determination to see the series thru to the end for answers kept me reading (all three books) but I do not think I will be reading more from this author. Answers are not aquired until late in last book of series. Ending and loose ends are wrapped up solid with a nice happy bow and everything that was dark now sparkles as they clang their wine glasses together and salute the villain??? I like a darker ending I think. PS this is really just one book divided into three seperate purchases. Beware if you purchase the first you will be left hanging, then decide to read the second, still hanging, there will be no answers until you read all three.

exposed Twisted Cedar Mysteries Book 3 edition by CJ Carmichael Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and the second was good, though not quite as strong as the first, so it was great to realize the third book in the series would be the best.

There are three families whose lives are intertwined by the sins committed by previous generations. Ed lauchlan committed four murders to punish his mother. When his son won't write the story of the librarian murders, Ed goes after others and more deaths follow. But when one of the twins, just nine years old, goes missing and Ed takes credit, his son will do anything to get him back alive, even write the book.
Normally i like to read a series because you can really get into the characters but it seems to me that some people needs to be reminded about the first and second book the whole tome in the second and third book. It's very irritating to read the same things over and over again. Why would you read the last 2 books of a series and not the first and if you have read the first why would you have to be explained about what happens in the first book over again in the second an third especially when they do a explanation in the beginning of the book anyway???
One book divided into three, cheap shot by this author. The story was good, so maybe it’s unfair to give it a one star, but it seemed deceiving to take one book and divide it into three. I will never buy another book from this author because of that. There are three books each one only 250 or less pages, really short, then as you read the first one it “ends” in the middle, forcing you to buy the second book, and then the same thing happens at the “end” of book two. Why can’t the author be honest, sell it as one book? She lost me as a repeat customer for good.
When Charlotte's nephew goes missing on his way home from school, the whole town turns out to try and find him. There is no stone unturned but still no little boy.
Dougal has a bad feeling that his father the librarian murderer has taken him so that he has leverage on getting his book written by his son.
This is the last book in the trilogy and was a great ending with twists and turns until the end. Great books.
I read this last volume in one sitting, if that tells you anything.

I enjoyed the story very much, but now, having read the final book of the trilogy, I have to say I think the author stretched the story out more than was necessary. The second book could easily have been eliminated, and no one would have been the wiser, IMHO. The characters were very well written and very likeable, all but the villain of course. I enjoyed the location of the story and reading about that part of the country. It sounded like a really lovely place to live. I was disappointed though that it was never revealed who Charlotte's real parents were. I kept waiting and waiting, especially during the very last pages. Alas I will never know.
I finished the first book in the series of three and immediately purchased and started reading the second book. When I finished the second, 24 hours later, I purchased the third, and last of the series. I honestly can't remember when I've last read a series in such quick succession. With the exception of the last book, I enjoyed them.

There were some loose ends that were not tied up satisfactorily (Ed's murder of his daughter and grandchild, for example).

I agree with what some other reviewers said about the story being told in the form of one book rather than three very short books. But greed seems to be pervasive and more and more authors are splitting up there stories into small cliff hangers to bring in more bucks. Do I like it? No, but there's nothing I can do about it except complain.

After taking a little break from C.J. Carmichael, I plan on purchasing the CJC mystery taking place in Montana.
This is the third and final book in a three book series involving one crime. Unfortunately, these books are written with a 'cliff hanger' that essentially manipulates the reader into having to acquire the subsequent books in the series. I do not like that type of coercion - especially for stories that are not that 'deep'. This series also reflects the author's romance roots. The relationship between the darkly handsome protagonist with the black curly hair and riveting blue eyes and the lead librarian who rips off her Foster Grant eyeglasses to become a drop dead siren that looks great in clothes when she goes commando......well you get the drift.....
A confession I only read the sample. The sample I read shows through great research into the religious and political climare of pre Reformation Germany. My critque is that edition has numerous spelling and transfer errors. For example "Rome" is transfered as "Eome", the German umlaut "u" is transfered "ii" , so "Nueremberg" reads as "Niiremberg"; finally the the footnotes and inline citations which are properly placed in the print edition, in the edition the citations are placed that the interrupt sentences
Penelope Hale is hungry-- rib baring, aching belly starving. Abruptly dropped from the cushy heights of extreme wealth into the gaping jaws of the Great Depression, her family claws for any meager scrap of food they can get. She is determined to break out of the pattern society has set for her and create her own foundation. Alone.

As Pip fights her way through a raging storm, she finds that food and water
can only satisfy the belly. When she learns that her suffering could be
the result of foul play, a more ravenous hunger takes over. She needs sustenance of a different sort, and she's simply starving for it.

Hale Storm The Hale Storm Series Book 1 edition by Alissa Bright Lara Kerr Cindy McCauley Literature Fiction eBooks

The narrative gives the reader the sense of being a part of the story. However, there were a few places where sentences seemed unfinished, and other times events out of chronological order or pieced together. Albeit, I'm looking forward to part two of the series.

Hale Storm The Hale Storm Series Book 1 edition by Alissa Bright Lara Kerr Cindy McCauley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is a good first book, Alissa's writing improves in the next two.
Alissa Bright is a great writer! I did not want to put this book down. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. (Plus it's "clean!")
Right from the bat I found myself drawn into the lives of these characters. Pip is very easy to relate to. I promise you will get lost in this book. This book is set in the past and the author does an excellent job of sending you back in time to feel all the love, passion and heartbreak that happened back then. I found myself laughing out loud and gasping more than once. Can't wait for book 2!!
I love this story is gripping and won't let go! I love long books and this certainly satisfies my thirst for adventure. Can't wait to get the next book!!!🙌🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 FIVE STARS
This book made me realize the tough life many people lived only a few decades ago. I loved Pip and her way of thinking. She is a woman and character I can relate too.
I would read again. I can't wait for the next book.
I felt as though I was living there. She writes so descriptive it was like watching a movie play out in my head with all the color and smells to make it seem realistic.
The writing is very good, but at times I felt the story dragged a bit. It just seemed to lack excitement, except at the end of course. I might continue with the series, though, just to see what happens.
The narrative gives the reader the sense of being a part of the story. However, there were a few places where sentences seemed unfinished, and other times events out of chronological order or pieced together. Albeit, I'm looking forward to part two of the series.
Gives a good coverage of the beginnings of the industrial revolution with the opening of banks, selling stock, and the worrys about how safe invested funds are. It also had a romantic twist and the comparison of the landed gentry with common folk.
2.5-3.0 stars

I really enjoy this author and Worth the Fall (McKinley book 1) is one of my favorite books ever. It's my go-to reread. Ever since reading Worth the Risk (book 2) about Hannah Walker and Stephen McKinley, I have been wondering about Nick and Mia, Hannah's brother and his girlfriend. They were together for most of Hannah's childhood and I just wanted a peak into their lives. This book spans from that time period, from when Nick and Mia first meet until the present. I loved seeing glimpses into their past, how they met and fell in love, to all the trials and tribulations they faced. With that being said, I was a little disappointed with this book. I felt that the balance between the past and present was a little off. I also felt like too much time was spent in the past and not enough in the present. To me it seemed like once Nick and Mia got together, the story sped up and then it was the end. I wanted to see them work more on their relationship and work out their issues more before getting to the very sweet epilogue.

The other issue I had is that I believe you should definitely read Worth the Risk before this one. The whole concept of Nick and Mia breaking up is the result of an event that happened to his sister Hannah, which is thoroughly explained in her book, but not so much in this one. The details were very glossed over. If I hadn't read Hannah's book, I know I would question everything pertaining to that horrible event. Although I didn't like this book as much as the author's previous, I am glad I read it and loved having closure for Nick and Mia. I am looking forward to reading the other Walker brothers' stories.

Worth The Wait A McKinney / Walker Novel Book 1 eBook Claudia Connor Reviews

Claudia Connor obliterated my heart with this one. I've read all about the McKinney brothers in her previous books and those were very emotional. But as we take a look at the love story between Nick Walker (Hannah's brother) and Mia, one that started when both were in college, and one that ended way too soon all those years ago, it's a wonder I was able to survive their heartbreak, let alone them!

This is one of those books where you have a perpetual lump in your throat and pit in your stomach because as you get to relive the history of Nick and Mia's love affair, you can't help but mourn the demise of their relationship right along with them. So perfect together, they brought out the best in each other as Mia found an overwhelmed college student in Nick, forced to become a father overnight when his parents were taken away far too young, struggling with his baby sister all the while trying to keep up with his studies. But once their fairytale is ripped apart quite suddenly and without warning, everything changes and they find themselves forced to separate, neither one ever looking back.

Gah! How I love a great second chance romance. And with Worth the Wait, the moment of reckoning between Nick and Mia gutted me time and again. This is not an easygoing book. Not even close. But it's so compelling and so very well written, there is no way to even think of turning away. You feel every bit of pain they experience as they come face to face again and stumble trying to get back what they lost so many years ago. It's heartwrenching but oh so worth it.

The characters are extremely likable and you can't help but root for that hard won happy ending. I was put through the wringer over and over but their journey is one I would gladly experience again. It's that good.

Do yourself a favor and grab this one. Actually start from the beginning with Worth the Fall and fall in love with the McKinneys and Walkers just like I have. You'll be very happy you did.

5 solid stars!!
I loved this book but hated it too! I got that Nick and Mia had a past. I read the previous books! It was heartwrenching and I understand their inability to move on. However, that would have been enough to base the story on. Instead we learn Mia's heart had been crushed not just because her relationship with Nick fell apart, but for two other separate reasons I can't go into without giving something away. It was constant sorrow the entire way through the book until the very end. It was actually morbid, all Mia suffered. I have enough problems in my own life and while I appreciate a certain amount of angst in my romances, this was over the top. Maybe the author thought throwing in Stephen's and Hannah's wedding was all the happy moments needed but I had a difficult time getting through this one. At one point my heart was so heavy I had to put it down and walk away for awhile. No more than a three star for me which is a shame because I really liked the characters.
Raptors ~ Birds of Prey (Reading Discovery Level 3). For ages 7-10. With keen eyes, sharp talons, and powerful wings, raptors rule the sky! Explore the word of eagles and hawks, falcons and owls - the awesome birds of prey.

Raptors Birds of Prey Nature Series Kathryn Knight 9781403776549 Books

I was looking for a book to introduce raptors to kids and this one is pretty good. It covers raptors from all over the world and is easy to read so it looks like it will work. So far I haven't had much chance to 'field test' it with the kids themselves, however, so will try to remember to update this review after I see how they react.
